Linphone 6.0 “Desktop Call Edition”: New Version Now Available on Desktop

Linphone 6.0 “Call Edition” now available for download on Windows, macOS, and Linux!

What is the “Call Edition”?

The “Desktop Call Edition” is a stable version of our desktop application dedicated exclusively to simple voice/video calls — the most commonly used feature among our users. By focusing on this core functionality, we were able to optimize the call experience and deliver an intermediate step toward the new user interface introduced in version 6.0, without waiting for the full development of instant messaging and conferencing features.

👉 If you also rely on instant messaging or conferencing, we recommend keeping version 5.2!

However, you can still try out the new Call Edition alongside it, without losing any data. If you use only basic calling features on a daily basis, feel free to switch to version 6.0 now and enjoy the updated interface.

The interface has been completely redesigned with a new UX approach, so we’re counting on your feedback to help us identify and fix any bugs.

How to try it on Mac and Linux?

No worries — you can try this new version without losing your data or call history, just follow these steps:

  1. Keep your existing Linphone 5.2 application on your computer — do not uninstall it.
  2. Download and install the Call Edition — it installs alongside version 5.2.
  3. Try out simple calls using version 6.0.
  4. Want to switch back? Just reopen version 5.2, and all your data will still be there.

⚠️ Warning: Windows limitations

On Windows, it is not possible to install two versions of the application at the same time. Installing the 6.0 Call Edition will automatically overwrite your current version.
Here are our recommendations based on your usage:

  • If you use calls only: you can go ahead and install the 6.0 Call Edition now.
  • If you also use video conferencing and instant messaging: we recommend keeping version 5.2 for now and waiting for the full 6.0 release.

Help us with translations!

With the release of Linphone 6.0, the interfaces have been completely rewritten and redesigned from scratch, which unfortunately means we couldn’t carry over the previous translations.

That’s why we’re calling on you, our community, to help us revive the translation effort. Your contributions ensure that Linphone remains accessible in multiple languages, with high-quality and accurate translations. Your help truly makes a difference.

Note: We now use a new translation platform, Weblate. If you had an account on the previous system, you’ll need to create a new one to access this one.
