Despite this evolution, most solutions remain dominated by a handful of proprietary, closed-source vendors—primarily U.S.-based companies such as Microsoft Teams Phone, Cisco, Zoom, and RingCentral. Together, these four players account for more than half of the global IP telephony and UCaaS market. With their dominant market positions, these providers often impose high costs while fostering increasing technological dependency. The use of these Big Tech solutions also raises significant concerns regarding privacy and data confidentiality.

In this context, an increasing number of organizations are seeking open, transparent, sustainable, and sovereign alternatives that can integrate with their existing infrastructures while strengthening technological autonomy and the security of their communications. This article explores these challenges and presents Linphone, an open-source telephony solution that supports a step-by-step transition toward modern VoIP as part of a sustainable digital transformation.

The risks of technological lock-in

Proprietary VoIP solutions currently dominate the market thanks to their integrated ecosystems and ease of deployment. However, they often place organizations in a vendor lock-in situation: users become dependent on a single provider, with limited interoperability, complex migration processes, and costs that may increase over time.

For example, Microsoft Teams increased the price of Teams Phone by around 25% in 2025, bringing the cost to nearly $10 per user per month. At enterprise scale, such pricing changes can have a significant impact on organizational budgets.

Furthermore, most of these solutions rely on cloud infrastructures hosted by U.S.-based providers. Data and communications transmitted through these services may therefore be subject to extraterritorial legislation such as the CLOUD Act, which allows U.S. authorities to request access to certain data held by companies subject to U.S. law, even when such data is stored outside the United States.

This technological and legal dependency raises a dual challenge for organizations: how can they ensure reliable and secure communications while maintaining control over their costs, infrastructure, and data?

Linphone: a transparent and flexible open-source alternative

In response to these challenges, Linphone stands out as an open-source alternative capable of removing the constraints of proprietary solutions. This complete software telephony solution, including a softphone, mobile applications, and a SIP server, enables users to make and receive audio and video calls over the Internet using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), a widely adopted standard in internet telephony.

Thanks to its open-source codebase, Linphone provides a high level of transparency: the solution can be audited and verified, facilitating security reviews and strengthening trust in communication tools. By relying on open industry standards, it also ensures interoperability with existing infrastructures, whether IP-PBX systems, Alcatel or Mitel solutions, or other SIP-compatible telephony systems.

This approach allows organizations to preserve their technological independence and avoid being locked into a closed ecosystem. They therefore benefit from greater freedom to customize, integrate, and evolve their communication solution according to their specific needs.

Finally, Linphone is available across all major platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, offering a smooth user experience on both desktop and mobile devices while supporting modern mobility and hybrid work practices.

A gradual migration for successful adoption

Replacing an existing communication system is often seen as a major challenge due to prior investments and established user habits. Linphone offers a gradual approach that minimizes the risks associated with transition.

It is possible to start by adding Linphone as a softphone alongside the existing VoIP infrastructure, allowing users to keep their phone numbers and usage patterns without service interruption. The deployment can then be expanded with Flexisip, the open-source SIP server developed by Belledonne Communications, which facilitates integration with traditional telephony networks.

Mobility is also addressed through native mobile applications. Finally, Linphone enhances the user experience with group communication features, including chat and video conferencing. These features are enabled through the integration of a dedicated conferencing server, providing a sovereign and open-source alternative to proprietary solutions.

A concrete example of successful adoption: the Isère Department

The project carried out by the Isère Department perfectly illustrates this approach. Initially equipped with a proprietary Mitel solution, the institution began with a proof of concept (PoC) involving ten users using Linphone. This pilot was then extended to one hundred users, including specific developments such as keyboard navigation for visually impaired users. Today, the solution is deployed to four thousand agents, with a second phase focused on mobile deployment, illustrating the confidence placed in this open-source technology.

Encouraging user adoption: a key success factor

The success of a migration project from an existing solution to a sovereign alternative largely depends on the quality of the user experience. Aware of this challenge, Belledonne Communications redesigned the Linphone interface starting from version 6, in collaboration with a specialized agency and tested with end users.

The Linphone interface now offers a user experience comparable to leading communication applications on the market. Personalized support, comprehensive documentation, and proof-of-concept deployment help ensure fast and effective adoption. The vendor’s human-scale structure also enables responsive support and a trusted relationship with its customers.

Toward open, secure, and controlled internet communications

The Linphone/Flexisip suite represents a complete open-source and sovereign alternative to proprietary communication solutions. Its ability to integrate progressively into existing infrastructures allows organizations to modernize their telephony without disruption, while strengthening digital resilience, communication security, and independence from legacy vendors.

How to regain control of your VoIP communications with Linphone
Telephony: a key lever for
