It is now possible to schedule a conference call with\u00a0<strong>several<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>participants<\/strong>\u00a0or to place an ad hoc\u00a0<strong>group call<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/linphone.org\/sites\/default\/files\/video_2_conference-5_0.mp4\" alt=\"\" \/><span style=\"color: #ff5e00;\"><strong><u><a style=\"color: #ff5e00;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/qiEIoIIc3cM\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/qiEIoIIc3cM<\/a><\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This major new feature is the result of\u00a0<strong>intensive R&amp;D<\/strong>\u00a0work conducted on the Linphone apps, the Liblinphone library, and our Flexisip server suite. Many new functions have been developed in Liblinphone, and new conference calling and meeting scheduling displays have been designed in\u00a0<strong>version 5.0\u00a0<\/strong>of Linphone for the iOS, Android, and desktop platforms.<\/p>\n<p>On the server side, the Flexisip conference server has been enhanced with a conference establishment mechanism that is compatible with the\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #ff5e00;\"><u><strong><a style=\"color: #ff5e00;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rfc-editor.org\/rfc\/rfc4579\">RFC 4579<\/a><\/strong><\/u><\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(SIP Call Control \u2013 Conferencing for User Agents) and a modern\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #ff5e00;\">Selective Forwarding Unit<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>(SFU) algorithm for routing media streams.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff5e00;\"><strong><u>Main features of Linphone\u2019s conferencing solution<\/u>:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/linphone.org\/sites\/default\/files\/post_news_-33.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Group calling<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>scheduled meetings<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Three display modes<\/strong>: active speaker, mosaic, and audio only<\/li>\n<li><strong>Point-to-point<\/strong>\u00a0encryption with SRTP (with end-to-end encryption coming soon!)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Always reachable<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>notified<\/strong>\u00a0in real time thanks to push notifications<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interoperability<\/strong>\u00a0with standard\u00a0SIP-based video phones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff5e00;\"><u><strong>A modern Selective Forwarding Unit<\/strong><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Existing audio\/video conferencing solutions of the \u2018<span style=\"color: #ff5e00;\"><strong>multipoint control unit<\/strong><\/span>\u2019 or \u2018<span style=\"color: #ff5e00;\"><strong>media-mixing unit<\/strong><\/span>\u2019 types have proved to be costly in terms of resources when it comes to video processing due to the algorithmic complexity of video codecs. This constraint led to the emergence of new solutions that transmit a useful subset of the streams received from all the participants to each participant. For example, only the video of the participant who is actively speaking is dispatched to each participant, together with some very low-resolution video streams of the other participants.<\/p>\n<p>This technology is referred to as a \u2018<span style=\"color: #ff5e00;\"><strong>Selective Forwarding Unit<\/strong><\/span>\u2019 (<strong>SFU<\/strong>) or \u2018<span style=\"color: #ff5e00;\"><strong>Selective Forwarding Middlebox<\/strong><\/span>\u2019 (<strong>SFM<\/strong>). These solutions open the path to conference sessions managed by a server that does not decode the media content.\u00a0The main benefit of a Selective Forwarding Unit is that it is capable of receiving multiple media streams and then deciding which of these media streams should be sent to each participant. This makes it possible to increase the number of\u00a0<strong>participants in a group call.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Linphone is likely to be the\u00a0<strong>first open-source SIP-based\u00a0conferencing solution powered by a modern SFU<\/strong>\u00a0server. As the server solution that we were using for instant messaging features was compatible with open standards for managing group chatrooms and their participants, the idea was to enhance this component with media capabilities. Therefore, the Linphone team developed an SFU algorithm within\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff5e00;\"><em><u><a style=\"color: #ff5e00;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linphone.org\/technical-corner\/mediastreamer2-ortp\"><strong>mediastreamer2<\/strong><\/a><\/u><\/em><\/span>\u00a0(our media processing library).<\/p>\n<p>This technology paves the way for a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff5e00;\"><strong>major innovation<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0that we are currently working on:\u00a0<strong>end-to-end encryption<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>for real-time audio<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>video conferences<\/strong>.
